Our Farmstand Adventures
In the summer Hermione and I buy all of our produce at our favorite farm stand, Balsam Farms in Amagansett. Doug and I started going there years ago and now it has become a family tradition. We make serval trips a week as we go through produce fast in this house! As the summer season progresses and their stock changes it is always fun to see what will be available. Strawberries one week, peaches the next! I love the thrill of the day their incredibly delicious ( and famous!) corn becomes available. We buy many ears and use it raw in salads and roast it on the grill. I rarely go to Balsam with a list, I prefer to buy what looks most appealing to me and Hermione when we arrive. She has serious opinions about her fruits and veggies and always tell me exactly what she wants. "How about yellow squash? How about peaches?"
She usually helps herself to more than a few "samples" while we are shopping! Snap peas have been a recent favorite. A budding francophile she refers to them as "petit pois!"Balsam produce is so incredibly delicious it doesn't need fancy, complex recipes. My favorite summer farm stand recipes include:
Simple Zucchini, Corn, Tomato and Basil Saute
Every Night Summer Salad (Hermione's favorite!)
These three heirloom tomato salads are great but only in mid-late August when tomatoes are at their peak!
