Saying Goodbye to Summer
This summer has been epic. Over the past two plus months I have been able to truly unwind and relax in ways I was unaware I needed so badly. I have felt my shoulders drop and most of the tension in my jaw release. I have slept longer and better than I have in years.
The girls have also had a wonderful summer. They have run around barefoot everyday. They have stayed up hours past their bedtime most nights. They have eaten their weight in ice cream. They have swam for hours at a time. Hermione played tons of tennis and golf and grew to love both. Portia almost ( almost) learned to swim on her own. Hermione and I spent a lot of the summer on horseback and that was it’s own magical experience for both of us ( read more about it here). Sharing a passion like that with my daughter is incredible.
As a family we went on tons of hikes, spent a weekend in the Berkshires and had alot of quality time just relaxing at home by the pool.
I would be lying if I said I was ready to say goodbye to this summer. Yes I miss our friends and life at home but there is a big part of me who is resisting going back to our hectic schedules. Back to School season is particularly intense and I am not ready to throw myself into the routine of traversing Manhattan multiple times a day. I have many exciting projects coming up this fall and I know once I get into the swing of things and past the “re-entry” phase I will be happy to be home. But I’m not ready yet.
If you asked me what I am doing to prep us for Back to School my answer would be, “very little.” Yes, Hermione’s uniform is waiting for her in her closet. Yes, I have made Portia a new “Me Book” to bring to her classroom. Yes, we have the requisite Back to School haircuts scheduled. But that is about it. For now I am going to soak up these last few days. I am going to try and finish one more book. I am going to take the girls out for more ice cream. I am going to let them watch another movie well past bedtime. Perhaps enjoying every last drop of this delicious summer is the best Back to School preparation there is? I think so.
