Finding Your Style with Rowan and Citizen G
Some of my most vivid memories of being a teenager revolve around beauty. The cold glitter gel I applied with a heavy hand to my eyelids in the school bathroom. My giant MAC cosmetic case filled with eyeshadows and lip glosses in all colors of the rainbow. The disappointment when I realized dark purple Manic Panic would not show up on my dark brown hair. The sting of my (since closed up) second ear piercing. I was always trying to find and express myself through beauty products and jewelry.
Recently, I hosted a makeup and jewelry event for several teens with two amazing companies I wish had been around 20 something years ago, Citizen G and Rowan. Citizen G is a new, clean makeup brand aimed at teens and pre-teens. Their goal is to inspire and empower each person to be the best version of themselves inside and out. I love that their focus is on inspiration and empowerment rather than the need to transform yourself with makeup. As a teenager it is so easy to feel insecure and less than. I appreciate a makeup company that embraces inner beauty and helps teens realize they are beautiful just as they are and that makeup can be a fun addition!
Each teen got to work one on one with makeup artist Katie Bacon to create a personal look using Citizen G products. The results were so varied. From glowy and natural to dramatic and playful each person wanted to create something different to enhance their own personality.
Rowan, an earring subscription box aimed to empower, celebrate milestones and foster self expression came armed with an array of earrings for everyone to try. Many of the teens had two, three or four piercings and it was so fun to see the earring combinations they came up with! Rowan also had a certified nurse on hand to provide (almost) painless and completely safe piercings to anyone who wanted one (and had their parents permission). I loved how many opted to get second and third holes right in my living room!
After each person had their makeup done with Katie and picked their Rowan earrings we took portraits of them to capture the look they created. Their individuality truly shone through in the makeup and earrings they chose and it was so special to witness. Below Katie shares each person’s makeup personality, the look they were going for and how they achieved it. It was an afternoon I will not soon forget and so honored to be a part of helping these young people express themself!
India
India’s makeup personality is soft, sweet, and timeless. As her aunt I have to say that is also her all around personality. I have never met a kinder, more genuine, lovely young woman. I adore my neice! Using the pale pink cream shadow on the lids as well as on the top planes of her face to highlight Katie gave her that etherial beauty look while enhancing her natural features.
Paige
Paige’s makeup personality is fun, playful, and confident. Katie could tell she wasn’t afraid of makeup. They decided on a more rock -n - roll look using black cream shadow, wrapping the lid (top and bottom) and adding loads of mascara for that fun going out with friends look. A softer champagne glossy lip gave balance to look making it fun, hip, and effortless. Focusing in on one feature (i.e. eyes or lip) is always a good idea when it comes to everyday makeup as the focus should be about you and not necessarily the makeup.
Noah
Noah’s makeup personality is experimental, reserved but bold. Noah was excited to try different things so they started off with a more natural look creating a softer neutral eye, a highlight and a glossy lip. After looking in the mirror, he decided he could go bolder! This was an exciting opportunity for both her and Katie because he was really wanting to express himself though makeup in different ways. They added black to the outer corners of the eyes for a smokier lid and ombre’d the mascara creating a thicker layer on the outer corners of the eye and a light coat towards the inner. They utilized the blue highlighter on the tops of cheek bones and a brighter red gloss for the lip. Noah looked amazing and felt confident and excited!
Sofia
Sofia’s makeup personally is classic beauty and trendy. She and Katie chose a lavender lid for a more fun approach to a classic and natural eye. Lavender is great on Sofia because she has a more olive complexion…the golden under tone and lavender are complementary to her as purple and yellow are on the color wheel. They added a nude lip so the eye would be the main focus feature, this gave an over all fresh fun pop of color that was complementary to Sofia while giving her that trendy edge.
Arielle
Arielle’s makeup personally is sweet and adventurous. Arielle wanted a bolder look and was up for anything when it came to makeup. She and Katie decided on a pink chromatic look. Using the hot pink cream stick, they created a graphic liner look on the eye and used a cherry stained gloss for the lip. It felt edgy, fun, and fresh, and she rocked this look with confidence.
Paloma
Paloma’s makeup personality is funny, and bright. Paloma loved makeup and especially liked color. She and Katie decided to make her lip the main focus giving her a brighter rosy/magenta pink on the lip. Her eyes are an almond shape and to extenuate the shape Katie added a light cream colored highlight in the inner corners and dusted a bronzy shimmer on the lid. Along with a JLO glow on the cheek she felt fun and ready for any occasion.
Emme
Emme is a kind hearted, natural beauty. Emme had a more natural approach to makeup so Katie wanted to highlight her natural features with bronzy, champagne tones and extenuate those amazing cheekbones with a sweeping highlight, making her skin the main focal point. A glossy gold lip amped up the look in a fun fresh way.
